Kenwick Centennial Events:

Kenwick turns 100 in 2009! To commemorate this milestone in our history, the neighborhood is planning events throughout the year to celebrate. Below you will find a list of ideas and discussions that occurred at our last meeting.

Next Meeting:
No formal meeting is planned for 2008 due to the upcoming birth of Sara and Michael’s child and the holiday season. Doug and Carol will be meeting informally along with anyone else interested in the historical work. Email “meetings” are encouraged for the remainder of the year. Please email Michael Cronk at mcronk@transy.edu or leave a voice mail at 221-8348 if you would like to like to participate in the planning of these events. Future meetings will be held for volunteers wishing to help out with the various events.

In attendance:
Michael Cronk, Sara Constantine, Doug Begley, and Carol Myers

Discussion of Possible Events:

  1. 3rd Annual Bungalow Tour – this will continue, under the “banner” of CK, but will be organized separately by its standing committee.
  2. Neighborhood Birthday Party – Tentatively planned for September 2009, possibly the same weekend as the neighborhood Yard Sale to encourage awareness. Idea is to possibly have a “pot luck” with KNA potentially providing “burgers and dogs” along with renting any facilities, etc. Research is needed on applicable city ordinances and regulations that would have to be abided by.  *There is need of a “Party Planner” to oversee this event in collaboration with the CK committee.
  3. Art/Music Gallery – This idea was from Louise Brunelle. Idea is to gather neighborhood artisans and craftspeople along with musicians for an event to showcase their talents. Depending on interest and level of planning support, this may be a stand alone event or part of the Birthday Party.
  4. “Cook-Off” and “Biking Events” – Emailed by Jay Christian. The cook-off could be something we incorporate into the Birthday Party or have as a stand alone. If pie is in the competition, Michael will be one of the judges! ☺

The biking events include ideas of a “bike parade” or a “road race” through the neighborhood as a way to get our neighbors out together. Michael will ask Jay to do some exploration of this to see if there is interest.

Discussion of Other Celebratory Ideas:

  1. Historical Research (Oral and Written) – Doug has graciously agreed to head up this committee and Carol will assist him. Doug has experience in taking oral histories and has the video/audio equipment to do so. He an Carol will work with any other volunteers to do background research and will be the “recipients” of artifacts, pictures, and names of those to interview.
  2. City proclamation – Michael will research, after the election of our new city councilors, the requirements and process for acquiring city-wide recognition for the neighborhood. Any of you who may know of the process are encouraged to contact Michael.
  3. Kenwick Street Signs – There was little discussion of this. Cost would be a major concern, but the KNA board is very interested in this option.
  4. News Coverage – we would like to make Lexington aware of this celebration and milestone for the neighborhood. We have a good relationship with the Herald-Leader and can hopefully get a story out of it. Another idea is to approach Nick Lawrence of WUKY to see about getting an interview for his Curtains @ 8 radio program. Once we have a better idea of the events and timeline we are considering, we can approach the media with story ideas.

Overall Marketing of CK:

  1. Committee is asked to consider what we would like the image of CK to be. What graphical, written, and colors do we want to use to begin branding Centennial Kenwick. Sara will assist in graphical design, but would like ideas from the committee. There was concern about using the Bungalow Home as a representation given that it is used for the Tour and we do not want to alienate the many neighbors not living in this style home.
  2. T-Shirts: Do we want t-shirts for sale celebrating CK? If so, what would we like to see on them. The committee would like to see t-shirts that are sustainably made if we are to go this route.
  3. Banners/Signs: To be used in conjunction with all events as a branding tool.

Budget:
Michael has discussed available funding from KNA account with KNA Board on 10/28/08.  They are very receptive to budgeting money for these events.  Each event will be evaluated on the basis of cost as they are presented.
